Motherhood : Passing Judgements

Oh, we moms.  You must admit - we can be SO judgmental (and Dad's too).

But what do our passing judgements really mean?

I'm no saint, trust me and it took a certain person calling me out for me to realize exactly what my commentary meant.  And wow! has it provided me with some greatly needed - appreciated change in perspective.

We all do it - pass judgment on other parents and their parenting methods, but what I started doing was turning the mirror back on myself.  Why do I feel the necessity to judge?  What is it about my own insecurity that is causing me to feel the need to point out these differences?

As soon I started doing that, wow did my perspective change.  Now I am not talking about passing judgments on the obvious things like, child neglect - abuse and those situations.  Those are obviously horrific and flat out impossible to imagine.  I am talking about the differences in choices like - formula feeding vs breastfeeding, making baby food, cloth diapering, attached parenting.  Those sorts of things.

It's not my place to tell these parents whats right for them, their community and how to read their children.  It's not my place to judge their decision based off a situation I am not even entirely educated on.  And more importantly - what is going on in my life to cause me to pass those judgements?  Have you ever thought of it that way?

I see a lot of passing judgement blogs about 'don't judge because your different' or 'we all parent differently' or 'all kids are different'.  Well yeah - duh.  That's a bit obvious.  Dive deeper than that.  You will judge, because we are all so different.  Don't kid yourself.  I encourage that when we do pass judgement or the urge comes about - detect it, and turn it about face quickly.

Do an evaluation.  Because our judgements are 99.9% of the time about us.

Time Flies

When you are a doula! oh - and a mother, partner and audio engineer.  Yikes!  It's Friday already.  Happy weekend everybody!

This week has been busier than usual.  I was honored to be a part of a beautiful birth with a strong, incredible mother and doting husband.  It was out of this world.  More on that coming soon.

As an engineer - there have been broadcasts to be made, promos to be placed in DAD and concerts to be recorded.  Adjustments to be made (time to be flexible!) and great music to be a part of.

And motherhood.  The root of everything - keeps me grounded (along with my super supportive partner, my cheering squad at 2 AM as I rush out the door, doula bag in hand!).  Soren is growing physically and mentally at high speed.  He is pointing out letters, hiking - balancing on logs that fall off of and continues to be my sweet, sweet boy.  2013 looks like a busy year and not at all boring.  I love my family and I love sharing my life with them.

This weekend is filled with doula visits (pre and postnatal), concert recordings, visits to Findlay (our awesome farmer's market), and a grill out with the greatest neighbors.

Bits and Pieces...

We have been pretty busy at the VandeDrink-Andress Household.  Rick has some great new clients and projects, Soren is a ball of energy and my CSO/May Festival season is on it's way out.  Since I haven't had a chance to blog in excess - I am going to use my Instagram feed to do a round up of our crazy past few weeks.

↑ My name is joined by several talented and amazing people on Philip Glass and Matt Haimovitz's recent release of Cello Concerto No. 2.  I had the opportunity to work with the Michael Riesman - not to mention the amazing Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra!  We were in the iTunes scroll for 2 weeks!

↑ I've got mommas term, the Doula bag is packed and ready to go!  Spring means yummy fresh salads with my favorite pink lady apples.  I love how everywhere I go, I see a part of my kiddo.  He loves his cars and trucks! ↓

↑ No words - He is getting so big and more handsome everyday.  How did I get so lucky?  Here we are on our way to Soren's first Red's game.  Soren downed a green smoothie and proudly sports his green 'stache. ↓

↑ We are Sensory Play abound in these parts.  From stacking our Juice Plus+ containers and plowing them down to digging out treasure (straws, spoons and forks - all of which Soren has worked into his vocabulary!) from yummy raspberry jello!  Soren is also an excellent Barista and makes the best coffee. ↓

And the most recent of events - my newest Tattoo and by new, I mean - got it yesterday.  It's a Lotus with my Oma's shorthand, from the flower up saying: Patience, Consistency, Respect and Love.  Four words that impact me and my family more with each passing day.  One of the many lessons I have learned from motherhood - with many more to come.  India Behrens from Skincraft created this work of art.  I love it. ↓
